Weekly Words  March 8, 2024

Dear Island Creek Families,

What a fantastic week for our Crocs with Read Across the World Week and last night’s This is Us Multicultural Night. As I drove home Thursday night, I reflected upon the amazingly supportive Island Creek families and how wonderful it is to see so many of you at schoolwide events we have held this year such as SEL and Literacy Information Sessions, Military-Connected Coffee, This is Us Multicultural Night, Math Night, Thanksgiving Lunch, Book Fairs, and Authors & Artists. A heartfelt Thank You to those of you who hosted a table, showcased a display, and/or held a performance as it was a perfect evening to celebrate the diversity within our community. Last night exemplified one of my favorite quotes (author unknown)….The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people.

The first full day of Ramadan is on Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. Our library will be available during all lunches if students would prefer to go to the library instead of the cafeteria, as many will be fasting. Please remember that throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, we encourage you to reach out directly to your child's teacher and/or Jen Fallert ([email protected]) regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour as Daylight saving time begins this Sunday at 0200.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership!

Warmly,

Jen Fallert

Daylight Saving Time Begins

Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., when daylight saving time begins!

Spring Picture Day  Tuesday, March 12

Use this access code: KPYSHSYH82 to order your Spring photos from the Barksdale Storefront

  • Online orders will generate a 'camera pass' that is sent to the parent's email. This pass should be printed at home and sent in with the student on picture day to be given to the photographer.
  • Students should bring their camera pass or order form (sent home in Thursday folders March 7) with them to give to the photographer
  • Pictures can be ordered online until 10:00 PM, March 14. After that, access to online ordering will be temporarily closed so that production can begin on submitted orders.

Picture packages will be delivered to the school and sent home in Thursday folders. For those who did not pre-order, a proof will be sent with information on how to place an order online.

There are no retakes for Spring photos.

February Croc Stars are Collaborative and Creative! Read Across the World Week! This is Us Multicultural Night! Ramadan (March 10-April 9)

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids. This artwork was created by Westfield High School student Naba F.

Ramadan is marked by personal and community prayer as well as fasting from dawn to sunset. If your child will be fasting, please let your child's teacher of Jen Fallert ([email protected]) know. We will be offering a space for students to go instead of the cafeteria if they plan to fast and want to be prepared. Thank you!

National Women's History Month

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. Thursday, March 21:  Rock Your Socks for World Down Syndrome Day!

Island Creek students and staff will be recognizing World Down Syndrome Day on Thursday, March 21 with “Rock Your Socks” where students may wear their favorite, wackiest, silliest, most colorful, fun socks! At Island Creek we want ALL students to be seen, valued, heard, and appreciated for their uniqueness. Did you know according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every 772 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common chromosomal condition?

Responsive Classroom: Redirecting Language

The power of our words (and tone) can make a difference in our day and with relationships, especially when speaking to children. Effective language conveys that we believe in children and their ability to succeed. Responsive Classroom’s redirecting language helps support both children’s growth and behavior.

Redirecting language…..

  • is clear, direct and specific
  • names the desired behavior
  • is a “do” statement

It is important to keep statements brief to allow children the space to be successful, even when self-control and/or emotional regulation can be a challenge in the moment.

Here are some clear, specific redirecting language statements you may considering trying at home:

- Stop and clean up your space.

- Walk.

- Close your computer, eyes on me.

- We use kind words.

- We take turns on the swings.

- Quiet voices.

- Push your chair in and go brush your teeth.

-  Stop. Look. Listen.

Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form

On Monday, March 18, Island Creek Elementary parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Ms. Ughade’s Math Class solved a Fraction Crime Scene February is Black History Month

February is Black History Month which is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in United States history. Did you know the theme for this year’s Black History Month is African Americans and the Arts?

Thanks to our Equity and Family Engagement Committee, all of our Croc Students are learning about a famous African American on our daily Morning News Show. This week our students learned about Douglas Wilder, Michael Jordan, Amanda Gorman, and Barack Obama.

Shown to the left is a gorgeous display that our 5th Grade Students created profiling famous African Americans whose contributions shaped the United States. We love the display so much, that we’ll be placing it in a permanent location in the building.

Calendar Reminder: March 5 Presidential Primary — Student Holiday/School Planning Day

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the safe and efficient administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

March 5 will be a holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day for teachers.

Yearbook Cover Art Contest: Entries due Friday, March 8

We are looking for talented artists to create our yearbook cover for the 23-24 school year. Entries will be accepted from all grade levels.

This year, we would like for students to draw Crocky doing their favorite activity! So if you like to read, draw Crocky reading – if you like to skateboard, draw Crocky and some friends skateboarding – video games, sports, dancing, watching movies - it’s whatever you enjoy doing!

Cover submissions must be 8.5 x 11 inches (same size as standard printing paper) and all designs must be vertical (portrait) orientation.

Submissions must have:

  • The name of the school: Island Creek Elementary (please double check spelling and grammar – proper titles should be capitalized).
  • The school year: 2023-2024.
  • The student’s full name and teacher written neatly on the BACK in pencil.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Bright and vivid colors are best since the cover must be scanned before printing.
  • Your design should fill the entire page and have lots of color - even the background! (The less white space, the better)
  • Be mindful that small details can be difficult to see – design elements should be big, bold, and defined.
  • Designs can include several mediums – Colored pencil, marker, crayon, watercolor, oil pastel.
  • Artwork must be an original creation.
  • One submission per student.

Cover art should be submitted to the main office by Friday, March 8 or sooner.

Shout-out to Island Creek Staff with FCPS Cares!

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

This year, Ramadan begins on Sunday, March 10th.  Ramadan is marked by personal and community prayer as well as fasting from dawn to sunset. Hiring Classroom Monitors - Please Join Our Team!

Island Creek is hoping to hire a few additional classroom monitors to join our incredible monitor team! Our monitors work hourly and support a variety of essential school-based operations. Monitor duties include supervision of students when teacher is called to a meeting, supervision during recess, material preparation for teachers and scheduled support in the cafeteria.  Hiring additional monitors at this time of year opens even more opportunities for our teachers to plan for specific and targeted instruction for our students. Experience in education is not required and we will support any training you may require.

We look forward to welcoming Island Creek community members to express interest via email to our Administrative Assistant, Kathleen Black, at [email protected].  The monitor position is paid at an hourly rate of $16.36 per hour. Thank you for considering joining our Island Creek team!

This week our students learned about Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Ruby Bridges, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks.

Shown to the left is a gorgeous display that our 5th Grade Students created profiling famous African Americans whose contributions shaped the United States. We love the display so much, that we’ll be placing it in a permanent location in the building.

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Nurturing Literacy and Art at Home

Dear Island Creek Families,

What a joy it was to see you at our recent Authors and Artists Night! The event was buzzing with both creativity and a love for literature and art.

Your presence and enthusiasm created a truly special atmosphere for our students to explore their imagination and celebrate the power of words and colors. We know you could be spending this time in countless other ways, so your dedication to your children's learning journey was quite evident.

As the magic of that night continues to resonate, we wanted to share some ways you can continue nurturing your children's love for literacy and art at home:

Literacy:

  • Bedtime stories: Make this a nightly ritual, even for older children. Let them choose the books sometimes, and encourage discussions about the plot, characters, and themes.
  • Visit your local library: Libraries are treasure troves of stories! Take regular trips together, explore different genres, and participate in library programs and events.
  • Start a family book club: Choose a book everyone enjoys and have regular discussions about it. This fosters critical thinking and strengthens family bonds.
  • Play word games: Scrabble, Boggle, Mad Libs – these games are not only fun but also help build vocabulary and spelling skills.
  • Write together: Start a family journal, pen silly poems, or create short stories together. This fosters creativity and allows children to express themselves through writing.

Art:

  • Provide art supplies: Crayons, markers, paints, clay, play dough – let their creativity flow freely!
  • Visit museums and art galleries: Expose your children to different artistic styles and techniques. Encourage them to ask questions and share their thoughts.
  • Get crafty together: Make collages, build sculptures, or decorate clothes. The process is just as important as the final product.
  • Engage in musical activities: Sing songs, play instruments, or create your own musical compositions. Music sparks joy and imagination.
  • Turn everyday activities into art projects: Bake cookies and decorate them, design cardboard box costumes, or create nature art with leaves and twigs.

Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and explore together. Your enthusiasm and encouragement will go a long way in fostering a lifelong love for literacy and art in your children.

Thank you again for being such a supportive and engaged community. Please feel free to share your feedback here. We look forward to many more inspiring events and shared experiences in the future.

Warmly,

The Island Creek Elementary School Team

Authors and Artists (we loved seeing so many Croc Families last night!) February is Black History Month

This morning students learned about George Washington Carver’s scientific contributions and one of his famous quotes, Education is the key to unlock the golden door of free. On Monday students will learn about Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist who taught himself to read and wrote many books, and one of his quotes, Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.

Shown to the left is a gorgeous display that our 5th Grade Students created profiling famous African Americans whose contributions shaped the United States. We love the display so much, that we’ll be placing it in a permanent location in the building.

Candy Grams: On sale, January 29-February 9 Specials: Music

In January, students explored movements and dance in music. 5th and 6th grade students explored the language of dance and created their own 5-part dance sequence, while other students practiced different dance and movement skills through games and folk dances. In February, students will be learning about music that’s connected to different cultures. Starting with Lunar New Year, Mrs. Tien brought some of her favorite childhood games she played when growing up in Taiwan for the students to explore. We are also learning all about instruments, music, and traditions from countries that celebrate Lunar New Year. During Black History Month, students will explore music written, played, and sung by some of the most significant black musicians of different genres. We will explore jazz, ragtime, rhythm and blues, spiritual, swing, rap, hip-hop, pop, and more! To end the month, students will have the opportunity to listen to classical music and will apply critical thinking skills when responding to and connecting with music

Kindness Week at Island Creek (February 12-16) Island Creek Celebrates Diversity

We want to empower our Island Creek students to have a strong voice, share their experiences, and learn from, and celebrate, each other! We would love to hear from our Crocs about the various traditions, holidays, observances, and cultural experiences families celebrate or recognize.

During February we would like our students to learn about the following observances:

  • Black History Month
  • Lunar New Year
  • Presidents Day
  • Washington’s Birthday
  • Additional February observances or celebrations that your child would like to share

If your child is interested in recording a 1-2 minute segment for our Morning News Show please use this link: https://flip.com/95550918 as we would love to learn from our Crocs! Alternatively, if your child would prefer to make a poster to display in the hallways at Island Creek, please have them bring their poster to the front office to be displayed.

Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 during the week of February 26 through March 1. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link:
