Spotlight on Specials: STEAM

Exciting things are happening at Island Creek in STEAM education! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, and it's all about integrating these subjects to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Island Creek continues to bring this innovative approach to the classroom, where students explore real-world problems and develop solutions through hands-on projects and collaborative activities. From designing simple machines to coding robots and creating artistic presentations of scientific concepts, STEAM education makes learning engaging and relevant.

For the first few weeks of school, we had the students “do CRUT.”  All the kids looked at each other and had no clue what CRUT was.  That was the point of the activity.  Students worked creatively for 15-20 minutes, using supplies in the center of the table.  Their creativity, teamwork, communication, and collaboration shined through! Were there bumps in the road?  Of Course, but they were resilient!  CRUT stands for Cooperation  Respect Understanding and Trust.  Take a look below at some of our students’ creations.

Please help support Island Creek's STEAM program by donating an item from our Amazon Wish List.

An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for children who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.

Instruction of the instructional units occurs at various times during the school year. Please contact your child’s teacher for specific dates of FLE instruction. We look forward to working as your partner in providing information that will help your child make healthy choices related to the exciting changes and new challenges he/she will be facing in the next few years.

Stay tuned for more updates on how our young learners are thriving in this dynamic educational environment!

Library News

Our Crocs have already embarked on many reading adventures this year, with 4,372 books checked out during our first month!  Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade lessons have focused on becoming familiar with library routines, locations of books in the library, and taking care of library books.

1st and 2nd Grade students engaged in a See, Think, and Wonder investigation of a primary source photograph about child labor and then read Mother Jones and Her Army of Mill Children, a narrative nonfiction book about a famous march of child workers from Philadelphia to New York in 1903.

4th grade students were introduced to the Island Creek History Hunters year-long scavenger hunt, which encourages 4th grade students to dig deeper into their study of Virginia history and Virginia ecosystems by reading Virginia historical markers and visiting historical sites, state parks, and National Park Service sites in Virginia.

Ranger Jen Rudnick of the National Park Service visited Island Creek Library for an assembly for all 4th grade students to kick off 4th graders’ participation in Every Kid Outdoors, which encourages families of 4th grade students to visit National Parks and other public lands.  4th grade Crocs each received an individual America the Beautiful pass (valued at $80) for use through August 2025, which covers standard entrance fees at National Parks and other federal recreational lands.  Island Creek 4th graders can earn History Hunters points for all Junior Ranger badges earned at National Park Service units in VA, MD, DC, and WV, so this is a great year for a Virginia staycation!  Popular books about National Parks in our collection can also be adventures for the imagination or help plan adventures for your family.

4th and 5th grade library students engaged in a challenging Breakout activity related to Constitution Day.  Similar to an Escape Room, a Breakout is a series of puzzles to be solved in teams.  In our fictional scenario, the two founding fathers from Fairfax County, George Washington and George Mason, have been kidnapped and transported through time. Crocs solved tricky knowledge challenges to open 10 locks and release one of the founding fathers in time to travel back to 1787 to sign the Constitution.  Do you know which founding father from Fairfax refused to sign the Constitution and why?  Ask your 4th or 5th grader!

During the first week of Hispanic Heritage Month, many students have checked out books from our featured displays of Hispanic Heritage biographies, picture books by Hispanic authors and illustrators, and Hispanic Heritage chapter books.

We have many new books in our collection, including wonderful new biographies made possible with support from our Island Creek PTA.   With your student logged into their FCPS Google account, you can browse and put holds on books to read together as a family from our Hispanic Heritage Biography, Hispanic Heritage Picture Books, and Hispanic Heritage Chapter Book collections on our Island Creek Library catalog.  These books are on display in the front of our library during Hispanic Heritage Month and are wonderful to read any time of year!

Save the Date: Island Creek's Social Emotional Learning Fair!

We invite Island Creek families to join us on Thursday, October 17 between 5:00-6:30 for our Social Emotional Learning Fair! We will have interactive activites, information, mindfulness, and more! We will also have a Food Truck!

Early Release tomorrow, Monday, September 16: 12:30pm

Tomorrow, Monday, September 16, will be Island Creek's first 3-Hour Early Release Day at 12:20 for school-age students. The early release will not effect preschool.

There are some students who have a childcare hardship and will be supervised at school until 3:20pm. For those students, there will be a second dismissal at that time.

Please make sure your child knows how they are going home on Monday.

If you have a change in plans please call the main office (571-642-6300) or email Jen Fallert, Principal, at [email protected].

Croc Rock-N-Run is this Friday!

The Croc Rock-N-Run fundraiser kicked off on Friday, September 6, and it's already a hit! So far, 189 enthusiastic students have jumped in to help us reach our fundraising goals. But with over 600 students at Island Creek, we need your help to keep the excitement alive and get even more kids registered. Let's aim to have at least 75% of our students on board!

We've already raised an impressive $13,353, which is 24% of our school-wide goal! Thanks to your efforts, students have earned popsicles at the Croc Rock-N-Run on Friday, September 20. But the fun doesn’t stop there! If we hit $15,000, we'll celebrate with a school-wide Pajama Day where students can bring their favorite stuffed animal for a cozy day of learning.

We've teamed up with the ICES PTA to ensure every dollar you raise makes our school an even better place. Your contributions will help beautify our campus with a new mural, blacktop art, and more. Plus, we'll upgrade the news studio equipment and purchase exciting new STEM curriculum items for everyone to enjoy.

Our goal is simple: if each student raises just $35, we'll be well on our way. And if everyone can pitch in $75, we'll smash our final goal! Every bit helps, whether you can give a little or a lot. The more we raise, the more we can give back to our excellent Island Creek teachers, staff, and students!

Parents, you’re invited to join the fun too! Come cheer on your kiddos with homemade signs, cheer pom poms, or anything else to make this event unforgettable—just no noise makers, please! Pre-registration is required, so sign up to be part of the action. You can also volunteer to help with parent check-in, water stations, set-up, break-down, or course support. Ask your student to share their classroom goals and what they are most excited about!

Let’s spread the word! Share this fundraiser and your child’s donation page link with family and friends. Fundraising is open through September 22, so there’s still plenty of time to make a significant impact.

Got questions? Reach out to the ICES PTA. Let's make this the best Croc Rock-N-Run yet

Ms. Ughade's Class posing with our new Crocky display! Spotlight on Specials: Art

We’re thrilled to welcome Mr. Korrow to our art department! Mr. Korrow will be at Island Creek Monday through Thursday and has been getting to know our “creative crocs.” He and Mrs. Rozycki have been establishing art room routines and emphasizing safety. Students in grades 1-6 have created custom nametags, learning bubble and block letters and various techniques like fades and patterns. Our kindergartners are also excited to dive into art, coloring human shapes to express their unique qualities.

We’re also introducing the Square 1 Art fundraiser at Island Creek this year. This program allows families to purchase items featuring their child’s artwork, such as coffee mugs, towels, and stickers. Projects are already underway in each grade, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit our art department, helping us buy new supplies and support events like a possible “Glow Show” art gallery. We aim to have items delivered before the holidays, though we can’t guarantee exact dates. More details will be sent home soo

As we get deeper into our curriculum, a gentle reminder to please ask your child(ren) to not wear their best clothing on art class days. All classes will eventually paint and work with clay so, it’s best to be prepared.

***Art room help needed*** There is always excitement buzzing around the art rooms and we could really use your help with preparation of class supplies, the hanging up and taking down of artwork and occasionally mounting artwork. If you are interested, please reach out as soon as possible to: Mrs. Allison Rozycki – [email protected]

Please ask your child to talk about what they are creating during their art time or if there is famous artwork that they have seen in class that has inspired them. We also love to hear about special adventures our students have outside of school to museums and other places they have seen interesting art. Making connections are important and help stir that inner creativity!

FCPS Cell Phone Policy

📵 Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our 571-642-6300.

Grades K-6

  • Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.
  • With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs.
Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6), Middle School (7-8), and High School (9-12).  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed by contacting Ms. Karen Baxter ([email protected]), Assistant Principal, or Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or [email protected].

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Survey: Potluck Dinners at Island Creek

Survey: Potluck Dinners at Island Creek

Dear Island Creek Families,

Ms. Baxter, Ms. Cash-Pinckney, and I are reaching out to gauge your interest with having potluck dinners at Island Creek. As a school staff we are focusing on students and families knowing they Belong and are Valued at Island Creek. We have the most amazing children and families at Island Creek; however, we know with the busyness of schedules and fast pace of living in the DC Metropolitan area, that it may be challenging for families to connect. We want to support building community amongst families as nearly 20% of our student population is military connected and we frequently welcome other new families to Island Creek.

The potluck dinners would be an opportunity for families to connect, share food, and get to know each other better. Administration would provide plates, cups, napkins, and cutlery, and families would bring a dish of their choice to share with others.

Please fill out this short survey so we can gauge interest. There is space on the survey for you to share any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions.

All the best,

Jen Fallert, Proud Principal

Island Creek's Croc Rock-N-Run

Island Creek's Croc Rock-N-Run

We've teamed up with the Island Creek PTA to ensure every dollar you raise makes our school an even better place.

Message from Mrs. Fallert

Dear Island Creek Families,

We are proud of Croc students' adjustment to the new school year. They have been enthusiastic about learning and have quickly adapted to our daily routines and expectations.

It's heartwarming to see how our Crocs are welcoming and inclusive of their classmates. The Island Creek Staff are focusing on fostering a sense of belonging as we feel it is essential for everyone in our school community to know they are valued and welcomed at Island Creek. Additionally, throughout the buidling you will notice Croc stickers with affirmations, hearts in the cafeteria with affirmations written by our 6th Grade students, and soon affirmation stickers on the stairs.

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and spends time with a great book!

Jen Fallert, Principal

September 11 National Day of Service

With the upcoming 23rd anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.

All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Middle and high school students can learn more about service learning by logging into their Naviance account.

Resources for Military Families

A dedicated FCPS webpage is available to support military families transitioning into our school system. Please visit it for a wealth of helpful information.

FCPS SEL Screener

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. Island Creek students in grades 3-6 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in October (10/9-10/16) and February (TBD).

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information about the SEL Screener including information on opting out please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Spotlight on Specials: Music

The musicians of Island Creek have hit the ground running! We are so happy to welcome our new music teacher Mrs. Arslan to Island Creek! In addition to learning and practicing the routines of music class, students in all grades have been practicing independent singing. From echo songs in kindergarten and first grade to tricky partner songs in 5th and 6th grade, our musicians are practicing singing in a small and large group setting, relying on their listening and teamwork skills to focus on important aspects of music such as blend and harmony.

Young Crocs in Motion Island Creek Library Volunteers Needed!

Our Island Creek Library welcomes parent & guardian volunteers to join the adventures in our library.  Whether you are seeking a peaceful and satisfying job in the quiet library back office (such as covering new books or repairing old books) or prefer a role in the thick of dozens of students looking for books to check out, your skills and efforts are needed to keep our library welcoming, engaging, and full of book joy.  Volunteer roles are even available outside of school hours and with tasks that can be completed at home.  Complete the volunteer interest form and Ms. Keaney, our librarian, will be in touch.

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

✨The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12

The 2023-30 strategic plan sets five main goals to create positive change in FCPS. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Each goal has an equity commitment — the promise we make to every student to support them in attaining these goals. Each goal also has several measures that allow us to track our progress.

The first goal in the strategic plan focuses on each and every student having a strong start in FCPS. Whether they're joining us in preschool or in high school, we want our students to be set up for success.See how Goal 1 is being put into practice.

Students Rights & Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30

Lunch Applications

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast will be $1.75.  Lunch will be $3.25, milk $0.60.  Money can be added to your child(ren)’s accounts using www.myschoolbucks.com.  You can also write a check to Shrevewood Food Services and deliver it to our Food Services Manager at Open House.   During the school year, you can find the menu for breakfast and lunch at https://linqconnect.com/public/menu/ESSF44.

Free and Reduced-Price Status

Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals will continue to receive these benefits through the end of September.   A new application must be filled out each new school year and forms are available  online now: https://www.fcps.edu/frm.  Applications are accepted at any time, but we encourage you to apply or renew your application before the end of September. Call (703) 813-4800 if you need help. This must be completed for eligible students to receive free meals.

New Benchmark Curriculum

As part of the FCPS Equitable Access to Literacy plan, FCPS is changing the way we teach reading to our K-6 students! Starting this school year, we will have a new curriculum for Language Arts which will help our students become better readers. Because of this new curriculum, all of our FCPS teachers who help our students learn how to read will have the same high-quality materials and lesson plans. When a student can read well, they do better in all of their classes and are more likely to graduate high school.

Message from Ms. Fallert

Dear Island Creek Families,

We loved welcoming our Croc Students and Families to school on Thursday for Open House! It was wonderful seeing so many returning students and families, and welcoming our new students and families to the Island Creek community.

Thank you fo the Island Creek PTA for providing breakfast on Monday to welcome our staff to the 2024-2025 School Year! The Island Creek Staff had a week of learning and preparing as we get ready to kickoff the new school year. We engaged in learning that encompassed:

  • Benchmark Basal Program for Language Arts
  • Universal Design for Learners
  • Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
  • New Math Standards
  • Explicit Instruction
  • Asset-based Culturally Responsive Teaching
  • Collective Responsibility with Co-Teaching

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays for elementary school-age children, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/rERUuFGfULyzTvre8 for each of your children who are enrolled at Island Creek Elementary. Walking Students to Class

Island Creek Staff will be available to help students find their classroom on the first day of school, Monday, August 19. Doors to the school will open at 8:20 a.m, and school officially begins at 8:35 a.m.

Due to our concern for safety and our desire to begin establishing important routines on the first day of school, we do not allow parents/guardians to walk children to classrooms on the first day of school, with the exception of our kindergarten students and new to Island Creek students. Please note the exception for our kindergarten students and new students is only for the first day of school.

Parents of returning students in Grades 1 – 6, please say “goodbye” at the front door. We will have plenty of staff on hand to help your child find their classroom once they are inside the building.

Thank you!

Thank you for entrusting your children to us as we are honored to serve the Island Creek community. Should you have questions, concerns, or suggestions, please reach out to your child's teacher. Elementary Cell Phone Policy

Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school, only.

Lunch with your Child(ren)

To ensure school staff have time to teach and reinforce cafeteria routines and procedures, we will be delaying the visitation of family members during lunch until October 1.

Home-School Tech Connections

Thank you to Ms. Mehrtash, our amazing School-Based Technology Specialist, for centralizing frequently accessed Island Creek Tech Tools shown below.

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Get more information and view the 2024-25 Opt-Out Booklets.
