Spotlight on Specials: Library

Our Croc readers have fallen into some great books this fall, with 8,489 books checked out!  Students may borrow books for up to 3 weeks, but it is ideal for students to get into the habit of returning their books every week unless they are reading longer chapter books. If readers need longer than 2 weeks with a book, they can renew their book loan online using the Destiny library catalog or by request at the circulation desk during library time.

For students who enjoy borrowing books more often than their regular library time allows, the library is open every day before school at 8:20 and after school until 3:40.  Readers may also request permission from their teacher to visit the library during the school day,

Students in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades read books during library time featuring Hispanic authors and illustrators, including Alma and How She Got Her Name, written and illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal, a celebration of unique names and family history.  Did your child ask you to share the story of how you chose his or her name?  Have you ever shared the origin of your own name, or the names of other family members?  Click to edit this placeholder text.

Given that it is peak leaf season, our 4th grade Virginia History Hunters have been encouraged to use their Every Kid in a Park pass to treat their families to outdoor adventures at nearby National Park Service sites, including Great Falls here in Fairfax County (a perfect illustration of the Fall Line that students studied in their Virginia Geography unit), Prince William Forest Park, and Shenandoah National Park. 4th graders can earn points in our History Hunters year-long scavenger hunt by reading Virginia historical markers and visiting Virginia historical sites.

5th and 6th grade students enjoyed rounds of “book speed dating” in the library, practicing how to efficiently “judge a book by its cover” by reading the back and inside front cover to help make quick book browsing decisions.  Classes have also been learning about new books in our collection by viewing book trailers and evaluating what makes a book trailer effective at persuasion.  5th and 6th grade readers will be storyboarding, writing, and editing their own book trailers for sharing on Schoology and/or on the ICNN morning news later this year.

On display in our library now are books about autumn and books about upcoming holidays and cultural celebrations, including Halloween, All Saints Day/The Day of the Dead, Diwali, and Election Day.  Diwali books have been are popular among children who celebrate Diwali and with students who would like to learn more about a holiday that some of their classmates celebrate.  Students can browse our online collection of Diwali books to place a book on hold for later delivery.  Happy Diwali next week to all who celebrate!Click to edit this placeholder text.

Diwali is on November 1

We wish a fun Diwali to all celebrating! Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. #OurFCPS

All Saints Day is on November 1

Next week we recognize those in our community observing All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos. For Catholics, All Saints Day (November 1) celebrates all those who are with God in Heaven, known and unknown. All Souls Day (November 2), known in Mexico and Latin America as Día de los Muertos, is a day of remembrance and prayer for all those who have died, especially for the souls who may be in purgatory. These special days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants throughout the world. #OurFCPS

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Island Creek Elementary School

Our school has been selected to participate in a pilot program for the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

A limited number of classes in grades 3-6 will be selected to participate. However, all students in participating grades, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email. We will administer the survey in selected classes during the school day between Monday, December 2, and Friday, December 13. Any student may take the survey at home, if preferred. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

English | Español | አማርኛ | 中文 | 한국어 | Tiếng Việt | العربية | فارسی | اردو

Good evening Island Creek Families,

It is with great pleasure that I inform you that the Virginia Council on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children voted on October 21, 2024, to approve Island Creek Elementary as a proud recipient of the School Year 2024-2025 Purple Star 2nd Award. This is a major accomplishment for our school.

The Council recognizes that earning the award for the second time is not an easy accomplishment. By achieving this award status, the school has established an embedded culture of belonging and support for our military-connected families. Additionally, the Council noted the important role our students play, as demonstrated in the description of Island Creek's Student Ambassador Program and Prinicpal's Student Advisory Council.

We are also honored to be receiving the Challenge Coin from the Department of Defense, a meaningful recognition rooted in the military tradition of presenting unit coins to individuals who have significantly contributed to the mission. This coin serves as a nod to our strong connection with the military community and our commitment to supporting military families. Both the award and the coin will be proudly displayed in our front office, serving as a symbol of our school’s dedication for all to admire. More about the history of the challenge coin can be found at The Challenge Coin Tradition: Do You Know How It Started?  U.S. Department of Defense

As the proud principal of Island Creek, I am honored to be part of such a caring and supportive community. I am blessed to serve the most amazing staff, students, and families, and this recognition is a testament to the strength of our collective efforts.

Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to the continued success of our amazing school.

All the best,

Jen Fallert, Principal

Upcoming Vision & Hearing Screenings

Vision and Hearing screenings will be held during the next week for Kindergarten, 3rd Grade, and students who are new to FCPS.

The purpose of the screening is to identify students who need further evaluation due to difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones. If your child wears glasses, please make sure that the glasses are at school on screening day. Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further evaluation is needed. Prompt follow-up with your health care provider is recommended as vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning. Message from Mrs. Fallert

Dear Island Creek Families,

We wanted to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude for your attendance at our SEL Fair on Thursday evening. Your support and engagement were invaluable as we explored social-emotional learning together. Thank you to our amazing counselors, Mrs. Bohnert and Dr. Clinkscales, for leading our focus on SEL.

Today the Island Creek PTA provided popcorn and music during lunch. It was a delightful addition to our Croc Rock-N-Run celebration, and fun was had by all! Our Admin Team and PE Team had a blast wearing costumes in honor of reaching our goal.

This coming Monday, October 21, we have a 3-hour early release at 12:20 PM. We appreciate your understanding as our staff will spend the afternoon engaging with training requirements from the Virginia Literacy Act and learning about Lightspeed and Get2Green.

Finally, our Share the Warmth Clothing Drive is now underway! We encourage you to donate new or lovingly used clothing for the next two weeks.

Have a wonderful Fall weekend and thank you for sharing your amazing children with us!

All our best,

Jen Fallert, Principal

Spotlight on Specials: Art

Autumn has officially arrived and it has brought inspiration to our art department for many amazing seasonal projects.

Kindergarten continues to work on the basic elements of art learning about lines, colors, and 2D shapes. Currently, they are using 2D shapes to create scarecrows. EAC is working on fall collage landscape paintings and first grade, pumpkin patch perspectives. Second graders have been learning a little about the cubism style of art and have drawn leaves and painted them with warm colors. Third graders have completed a guided draw of pumpkins with patterns and have been experimenting with watercolor techniques to brighten their work with lots of color.

Fourth graders have begun fall collage landscapes involving construction paper and fifth grade has been working on painted landscapes involving atmospheric perspective. Sixth graders created autumn landscape silhouettes exploring warm tones using liquid watercolors. They also are working on a tribute to veterans in the form of a paper quilt.

Mr. Korrow and Mrs. Rozycki are excited to share that 645 of their students’ artwork has been successfully shipped to Square 1 Art Company in Georgia. Square 1 Art will photograph students' work and generate catalogs featuring each student’s individual art project that we hope to send home to all families in the next couple of weeks. Square 1 transforms artwork into keepsakes. Purchases made by Nov. 13, 2024, will support our ICES art department and will help bring special supplies and unique gallery opportunities to our “Croc artists

Indigenous Peoples' Day

Monday, October 14, is a student holiday and staff development day for Indigenous Peoples' Day.  On the second Monday of October and the month of November, people all over the United States celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Native American Heritage Month. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the diverse perspectives, experiences, and contributions of Indigenous people (globally) year-round, and these celebrations are an opportunity to honor these important stories.   See the complete school year calendar.

Thursday, 10/17: Island Creek's Social Emotional Learning Fair!

We invite Island Creek families to join us on Thursday, October 17 between 5:00-6:30 for our Social Emotional Learning Fair! We will have interactive activities, information, mindfulness, and more! We will also have a Food Truck!

Digital Citizenship Week: October 15-18

We’re excited to announce that Island Creek will be celebrating Digital Citizenship Week from October 15-18! This week is dedicated to helping our students navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. Throughout the week, students will engage in activities and discussions about digital ethics, online safety, and the importance of maintaining a positive digital footprint.

We encourage you to talk with your child about their online experiences and reinforce the lessons learned at school. Together, we can help our students become responsible digital citizens!  We will be celebrating with a Spirit Week which we will focus on a different area of digital citizenship.  Below you will find digital citizenship resources provided by FCPS to support child at home.  Additionally, you will find resources provided by Fairfax County Government.

Principals' Student Advisory Council

Did you know that Island Creek has a Principals' Student Advisory Council (PSAC) comprised of 5th and 6th Grade students who meet with Ms. Fallert twice a month to share their perspective on how to make Island Creek an even better school? The PSAC supports service learning by undertaking our annual Share the Warmth Clothing Drive. This week they made posters advertising the clothing drive and in the coming weeks, they will help fold and sort the donated clothes!

Spotlight on Specials: Music

We are hard at work in the music room at Island Creek. Here is a quick rundown of what we are doing in each grade:

Kindergarten- practicing the concept of fast and slow;  preparing the concept of loud and soft

1st Grade- practicing the concepts of fast and slow, loud and soft, high and low, rhythm vs. beat/ preparing to perform with rhythms with quarter notes and eighth notes

2nd Grade- practicing quarter and eighth notes and bitonic music (the solfege sounds “sol” and “mi”);  preparing music with quarter rest and the solfege sound “la”

3rd Grade- practicing quarter, eighth note, rest, and half note and tetratonic music (do, mi, sol, la); preparing music with the solfege sound “re”

4th Grade- practicing quarter, eighth note, rest, half note, whole note, and tetratonic music (do, mi, sol, la); preparing music with the solfege sound “re” and music with sixteenth notes

5th Grade- practicing quarter, eighth note, rest, half note, whole note, sixteenth note, and pentatonic music (do, re, mi, sol, la), preparing music in the extended pentatonic scale and eighth note/sixteenth note patterns

6th Grade- practicing 5th grade- practicing quarter, eighth note, rest, half note, whole note, sixteenth note, eighth/sixteenth note patterns, and pentatonic music; preparing more eighth/sixteenth patterns and more notes in the extended pentatonic scale.

As teachers who follow the pedagogy of the great Hungarian music teacher and musician Zoltan Kodaly, Mrs. Arslan and Mrs. Laird teach these concepts through a robust body of American and international folk songs. While the children learn and memorize simple songs through our activities and games, they also internalize the concepts listed above and explore them with increasing rigor each lesson.

In addition to our music class fun, Chorus is in full swing! We have about 60 singers in our 5th and 6th grade Chorus and we are hard at work preparing for the following events:

Star Spangled Banner performance at Hayfield Secondary Homecoming Game- October 25

Star Spangled Banner performance at FCPS School Board Meeting- December 5

Winter Concerts- December 17

We have also selected several students to be members of our honors chorus! These students will participate in the Virginia Organization of Kodaly Educators Choral Festival in January and the 6th Grade All-County Choral festival in March. Congratulations to David H., Kaelee C., Alina S., Ramona E., Zoe M., Hailey L., Fifi MO., Malala J, Jaelyn M, and Amira H.

Spotlight on Specials: STEAM

Exciting things are happening at Island Creek in STEAM education! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, and it's all about integrating these subjects to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Island Creek continues to bring this innovative approach to the classroom, where students explore real-world problems and develop solutions through hands-on projects and collaborative activities. From designing simple machines to coding robots and creating artistic presentations of scientific concepts, STEAM education makes learning engaging and relevant.

For the first few weeks of school, we had the students “do CRUT.”  All the kids looked at each other and had no clue what CRUT was.  That was the point of the activity.  Students worked creatively for 15-20 minutes, using supplies in the center of the table.  Their creativity, teamwork, communication, and collaboration shined through! Were there bumps in the road?  Of Course, but they were resilient!  CRUT stands for Cooperation  Respect Understanding and Trust.  Take a look below at some of our students’ creations.

Please help support Island Creek's STEAM program by donating an item from our Amazon Wish List.

National Walk to School Day: Wednesday, October 9

We encourage families that can participate to join in on the fun, healthy, and safe choice of walking to school! We will have music and stickers to hand out as students and families arrive at school. If students are unable to participate but let Ms. Barber and Mr. Magagnoli know about a walk they take outside of school hours, they are welcome to pick up a sticker during their PE class. We look forward to celebrating a safe and healthy route to school!

Family Life Education

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in Kindergarten through third grade, receive instruction in an Emotional and Social Health unit. Students in grades four through six, receive instruction in a Human Growth and Development unit and an Emotional and Social Health unit. For detailed grade-level program descriptions, go to https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary/family-life-education.

You are invited to an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media & lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The virtual meeting will be held on October 9, at 6:00 – 7:00 PM using this link: https://meet.google.com/quc-ffys-gag. All program materials and media for all grade levels are available for your review at:  https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k6/elementary-family-life-education

You can also preview these lessons by grade level on Schoology (use the same login as your SIS ParentVUE account). Once logged in, select ‘course dashboard’ then click on ‘all parents at Island Creek’. Select the ‘parent preview – FLE instruction’ folder; select what grade level you would like to view.

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out this form:  https://www.fcps.edu/node/31710  and return it to the main office by November 8. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons, you do not need to complete another form. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify Island Creek’s principal, Jen Fallert at [email protected], in writing before instruction begins.

An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for children who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.

Instruction of the instructional units occurs at various times during the school year. Please contact your child’s teacher for specific dates of FLE instruction. We look forward to working as your partner in providing information that will help your child make healthy choices related to the exciting changes and new challenges he/she will be facing in the next few years.

Stay tuned for more updates on how our young learners are thriving in this dynamic educational environment!

Library News

Our Crocs have already embarked on many reading adventures this year, with 4,372 books checked out during our first month!  Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade lessons have focused on becoming familiar with library routines, locations of books in the library, and taking care of library books.

1st and 2nd Grade students engaged in a See, Think, and Wonder investigation of a primary source photograph about child labor and then read Mother Jones and Her Army of Mill Children, a narrative nonfiction book about a famous march of child workers from Philadelphia to New York in 1903.

4th grade students were introduced to the Island Creek History Hunters year-long scavenger hunt, which encourages 4th grade students to dig deeper into their study of Virginia history and Virginia ecosystems by reading Virginia historical markers and visiting historical sites, state parks, and National Park Service sites in Virginia.

Ranger Jen Rudnick of the National Park Service visited Island Creek Library for an assembly for all 4th grade students to kick off 4th graders’ participation in Every Kid Outdoors, which encourages families of 4th grade students to visit National Parks and other public lands.  4th grade Crocs each received an individual America the Beautiful pass (valued at $80) for use through August 2025, which covers standard entrance fees at National Parks and other federal recreational lands.  Island Creek 4th graders can earn History Hunters points for all Junior Ranger badges earned at National Park Service units in VA, MD, DC, and WV, so this is a great year for a Virginia staycation!  Popular books about National Parks in our collection can also be adventures for the imagination or help plan adventures for your family.

4th and 5th grade library students engaged in a challenging Breakout activity related to Constitution Day.  Similar to an Escape Room, a Breakout is a series of puzzles to be solved in teams.  In our fictional scenario, the two founding fathers from Fairfax County, George Washington and George Mason, have been kidnapped and transported through time. Crocs solved tricky knowledge challenges to open 10 locks and release one of the founding fathers in time to travel back to 1787 to sign the Constitution.  Do you know which founding father from Fairfax refused to sign the Constitution and why?  Ask your 4th or 5th grader!

During the first week of Hispanic Heritage Month, many students have checked out books from our featured displays of Hispanic Heritage biographies, picture books by Hispanic authors and illustrators, and Hispanic Heritage chapter books.

We have many new books in our collection, including wonderful new biographies made possible with support from our Island Creek PTA.   With your student logged into their FCPS Google account, you can browse and put holds on books to read together as a family from our Hispanic Heritage Biography, Hispanic Heritage Picture Books, and Hispanic Heritage Chapter Book collections on our Island Creek Library catalog.  These books are on display in the front of our library during Hispanic Heritage Month and are wonderful to read any time of year!

Early Release tomorrow, Monday, September 16: 12:30pm

Tomorrow, Monday, September 16, will be Island Creek's first 3-Hour Early Release Day at 12:20 for school-age students. The early release will not effect preschool.

There are some students who have a childcare hardship and will be supervised at school until 3:20pm. For those students, there will be a second dismissal at that time.

Please make sure your child knows how they are going home on Monday.

If you have a change in plans please call the main office (571-642-6300) or email Jen Fallert, Principal, at [email protected].

Croc Rock-N-Run is this Friday!

The Croc Rock-N-Run fundraiser kicked off on Friday, September 6, and it's already a hit! So far, 189 enthusiastic students have jumped in to help us reach our fundraising goals. But with over 600 students at Island Creek, we need your help to keep the excitement alive and get even more kids registered. Let's aim to have at least 75% of our students on board!

We've already raised an impressive $13,353, which is 24% of our school-wide goal! Thanks to your efforts, students have earned popsicles at the Croc Rock-N-Run on Friday, September 20. But the fun doesn’t stop there! If we hit $15,000, we'll celebrate with a school-wide Pajama Day where students can bring their favorite stuffed animal for a cozy day of learning.

We've teamed up with the ICES PTA to ensure every dollar you raise makes our school an even better place. Your contributions will help beautify our campus with a new mural, blacktop art, and more. Plus, we'll upgrade the news studio equipment and purchase exciting new STEM curriculum items for everyone to enjoy.

Our goal is simple: if each student raises just $35, we'll be well on our way. And if everyone can pitch in $75, we'll smash our final goal! Every bit helps, whether you can give a little or a lot. The more we raise, the more we can give back to our excellent Island Creek teachers, staff, and students!

Parents, you’re invited to join the fun too! Come cheer on your kiddos with homemade signs, cheer pom poms, or anything else to make this event unforgettable—just no noise makers, please! Pre-registration is required, so sign up to be part of the action. You can also volunteer to help with parent check-in, water stations, set-up, break-down, or course support. Ask your student to share their classroom goals and what they are most excited about!

Let’s spread the word! Share this fundraiser and your child’s donation page link with family and friends. Fundraising is open through September 22, so there’s still plenty of time to make a significant impact.

Got questions? Reach out to the ICES PTA. Let's make this the best Croc Rock-N-Run yet
